Book Description

"Kristin Hannah’s potent storytelling skills are brilliantly served by narrator Julia Whelan, whose limber, low-pitched voice moves nimbly from person to person, capturing personality and mood, her empathy palpable."—The Washington Post

From the celebrated author of The Nightingale and The Four Winds comes Kristin Hannah's The Women—at once an intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself. When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.

As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

Review

"Hannah again shines her light on overlooked women in history" ―People Magazine (Book of the Week)

"Hannah is in top form here... Hannah’s real superpower is her ability to hook you along from catastrophe to catastrophe, sometimes peering between your fingers, because you simply cannot give up on her characters. She gathers women into the (Vietnam) experience with moving conviction." ―The New York Times

“The Women is historical fiction at its very best. So moving, so wrenching, and yet, in the end, uplifting. Brava! I loved The Nightingale and The Four Winds, but The Women is my favorite.” ―Nicholas D. Kristof, Pulitzer Prize–winning coauthor of Half the Sky

“One of the greatest storytellers of our time, Kristin Hannah, tackles one of the most cruel and despicable wars of the last century, the Vietnam War. The Women reveals the powerful contributions and horrific sacrifices of the American military nurses who served in a war whose agencies refused to acknowledge that they were
even there. Perhaps no words can bring closure to a nation still ashamed of booing our returning heroes, but the heroine, Frances McGrath, stirs a deep, overdue compassion and tears for every single soldier―and especially the forgotten women who sacrificed so much. Never has a novel of war metamorphosed so profoundly into a story of the human heart.” ―Delia Owens, author of Where the Crawdads Sing

“Stuns with sacrifice; uplifts with heroism . . . an important, long overdue tribute to the brave women nurses who served in Vietnam.” ―Bonnie Garmus, author of Lessons in Chemistry

"Hannah’s emotionally charged page-turner (after
The Four Winds) centers on a young nurse whose life is changed by the Vietnam War. Before Frankie McGrath begins basic training for the Army in 1966, her older brother Finley is killed in action. Frankie excels as a surgical nurse in Vietnam and becomes close with fellow nurses Ethel and Barb. After Ethel’s tour ends, Frankie and Barb gets assigned to the base at Pleiku, near the Cambodian border, where some of the heaviest fighting occurs. There, she reunites with Navy officer Rye Walsh, Finley’s best friend, and they become lovers. When Frankie returns to the U.S., she’s met with indifference for her service from her parents, who are still grieving her brother’s death, and disdain from people who oppose the war. She leans on alcohol and drugs while struggling to acclimate to civilian life. Though the situations and dialogue can feel contrived (Rye, after announcing he’s re-upping, says to Frankie at the close of a chapter, “I’m not leaving my girl”), Hannah’s depictions of Frankie tending to wounded soldiers are urgent and eye-opening, and a reunion of the three nurses for Frankie’s benefit is poignantly told. Fans of women’s historicals will enjoy this magnetic wartime story." ―Publishers Weekly

"Many would say that the nurses who helped fight the Vietnam War were forgotten. Believe me, for those of us who were there, these women were never forgotten--and never will be. Kristin Hannah honors them with this novel." --Karl Marlantes, author of Matterhorn

"Hannah enjoys the authorial reach to educate legions of readers about the significant subjects she dramatizes. In doing so she demonstrates that, just like the women she writes about, she deserves to be recognized." -Minneapolis Star Tribune

"A moving, gripping tale that pays tribute to the under-appreciated skill and courage of combat nurses." --Booklist, starred review

"Hannah tells the story of real but unsung heroes" --Washington Post

"Enough time has passed that most people acknowledge the individual heroism that took place in Vietnam, even though history doesn't look kindly on the war itself," he wrote. "People over there did things that we can ― and should ― be proud of. That's one reason why I'm glad to see a book like 'The Women' doing so well. It's a beautifully written tribute to a group of veterans who deserve more appreciation for the incredible sacrifices they made." --Bill Gates

Just one more time women s contributions were ignored.
I was 1 of those people opposed to the war but never shamed the people who served there. As a long time feminist I knew that the women who served were forgotten. Not surprising because women were eliminated in so many places and times in history. I found this book brought up emotions long forgotten. My husband was a Flying Tiger pilot and flew supplies into Vietnam along with groups in and out of the country. Although he saw nothing like the service men and women did there he never talked about it. Our government lied to us and destroyed so many lives not to say the least the thousands that lost theirs. Everyone should read this book
Wow! The best book I ve read in a long while!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I ve never read a novel about the Vietnam war before. I m 60, and was too young at the time to know what was going on. I ve known people who lost siblings in the war and others whose siblings came home broken in body or in spirit. Now I understand a little bit about it. I became immersed in the story and felt like I knew the characters and was there with them, experiencing all they were going through. The main character s struggles were described so honestly. I felt her vulnerability, her anger and her shame. Although the subject of war is not enjoyable, it was enjoyable reading this novel. It s quite a good book that also gave me a better understanding of the Vietnam era.
The Women (My Kindle Review)
Hannah s latest historical novel focuses on nursing student Frankie McGrath during the 1960s when the Vietnam War is occurring and is impacting the United States. Coming from a prestigious family in California with a large war history of their own, she is more different as she s more into following her own style and being her own woman. Her brother Finley ships out to serve his country with much praise and respect from their father. However when her brother is tragically killed in action, Frankie decides to follow in her family s footsteps to serve in the war in the Army Nurses Corps. Fueled with her belief that women can be heroes despite her father s views that they can t, Frankie will see the inner side of the war with her own eyes while her life will change during and after Vietnam.
Kristin Hannah never disappoints
Another Kristin Hannah book that absolutely broke me. Frankie is such a strong woman for serving her country fearlessly, then on top of that dealing with the aftermath of coming home from war. The friends she made during her time that she served are truly each other s soulmates. Their strength and support towards each other is something to be admired. Having those women by her side while experiencing the war and also being able to lean on them when she returned home is so powerful.Frankie can t seem to catch a break in life. Between what she experienced during war to having her heart broken numerous times she continues to just survive life. As if war wasn t hard enough, having to come home to a family and country that didn t recognize women being in the Vietnam War, her struggles throughout this book are truly heart crushing. This book is a powerful and emotional read. Truly one of the best historical fiction books I ve ever read. Kristin Hannah s novels are beautifully written with powerful messages that last long beyond her words.
Absolutely amazing! An easily, well deserved 5 star read!
This is an incredible book that feels, that simply has to be realistic. It captures the innocence of a time that transitions into a time of awakening. I was just a few years too young to understand what was happening in Vietnam, so am thankful for the awareness this book brought me of an important time in our history. It s a tough read, but captivating. And I made it all the way through until it got to the Vietnam Memorial before I broken into tears. I strongly recommend this book. It s important to remember those who have answered the call to serve our country.
BRAVO KRISTIN HANNAH! 5 STARS!
This book was so amazing! I love historical fiction and this was such a great read! This book I would think about during the day at work wondering what happens next it was so good! Kristin Hannah is one of my current favorite authors... Nightingale will always be my number 1 but this is a very close second! All the details and descriptions in this book were so vivid I could picture it all. I enjoyed Frankie and the lead character... I laughed with her, I cried for her, got angry with her, and at one point wanted the throw the book across the room because of a certain character (I won't give it away because you have to read it!!) A must read for Kristin Hannah fans and historical fiction! ️ ️ ️ ️ ️
Great Read
3 nurses serving in Vietnam tells of the camaraderie, fears, pain and losses of those whom they cared for, solders and civilians, offers a small insite of the horrible experiences they witnessed. Vets return stateside were met with protesting, screaming and being spit upon, as our country grappled with a War that was thought to never have started. When Frankie tried to get help from the VA facilities, she was told it was for Vets only. She told them she was a Vet and was informed "Women are not in Vietnam". The struggle to pull her life toghter was sad, not being to obtain help. I felt her pain and tears. The ending shares how Frankie survived and helped other Vets. I found it appaling as many of our Congressmen/woman and Senators didn't know of women in Vietnam or choose to stick their heads in the sand as the country was fed lie upon lie about Vietnam and losses of our men(kids) and the women nurses!
One of the most important books I have ever read.
I enjoyed every page of this book. Every smile, every tear, every emotion. An hour after I completed the book I questioned "What are men so afraid of?" Why do they want to dismiss a women's achievement but give a good old slap on the back for another man? Women of a certain age know too well the struggle to be recognized equally and to have equal rights, salary, financial credit. The Vietnam war turned parents and their children against each other, depending on, their belief of the war versus serving your country. Father's, the man of the household, made the final family decision. But women began demand and to think for themselves. Vietnam caused much harm, but from those ruins, understanding, strength and acceptance began. Child to parent, parent to child, citizen to country, country to all citizens; regardless to sex, race, color, etc. Great book. A real thinker.
Emotional
I admit I'm not an emotional reader. It takes a lot me make me shed tears while reading, but the ending of this book was surprisinly emotional for me. I love reading historical novels, but I knew little about the Vietnam War and its outcomes to the soldiers and nurses who ventured in there in service. A really good book that like many other that I've been reading, show the forgotten role of women in wars that marked a whole generation.
A Must Read
From the first sentence, this novel drew me in and didn t let go. Gripping, sad, heart pounding, funny, love-filled, emotional, infuriating, inspirational, and at the end, so much hope - a historic novel that tackles a subject greatly neglected to this day, and does it in a most engaging, believable and truthful way. The writing, the story, the ups and downs make for an excellent read and I highly recommend this book. Thank you, Kristin!!
This book is powerful
Every American should read this book. It is very well written and will make you cry and make you smile. My brother was too young to be drafted into the Vietnam War, but it was a big part of our childhood. This is a story that needed to be told, and we all need to read. I highly recommend this book. I pray that our veterans will never have to experience the shameful way we treated those returning from Vietnam.
heartbreaking and inspiring
Omg, Kristin Hannah is the best historical fiction author! This book had me hooked since the beginning and had me sobbing! It was heartbreaking and inspiring at the same time. I loved this book
